What is written can be found again.
The Bureau survives because it remembers. Every bargain, violation, recovery, and unexplained exception enters an archive larger on the inside than the institution that carries it.
Each case is copied into the traveling Redwrit: the Bureau’s official history, written in ink that darkens around omissions. Pages cannot prevent lies, but they can make absence visible. Junior inspectors learn quickly that blank space is evidence.
Traits are indexed by origin, effect, appetite, reversibility, and emotional contamination. The system is precise until it encounters divinity, grief, or love. Those categories are filed under PENDING because every previous definition eventually contradicted itself.
A closed case is not a solved case. Old bargains wake. Confiscated voices learn new words. Towns forget why they stopped ringing a bell. Records give the next inspector a trail—and give the dead one final chance to be useful.
