EVIDENCE PLATE / CASE 001 / CH. 07VISUAL RECORD FILED
At midnight in the intake wagon, Bramble raises the red disposition stamp while Nelly, Marie, Caro and Nelly’s curled smoke-black shadow gather around Case File 001.
A case can survive its ending. So can the people inside it.

The town heard the bell and remembered everything at once. Doors opened along the flooded street. People emerged carrying old contracts, empty grain measures and the shame of having allowed one exhausted bell ringer to become their entire defense.

Nora Flint met Nelly at the tower door. Together they lowered Caro through the spiral stair while Marie walked behind them, her cane trained on every shadow. When the council approached with apologies, Caro asked for water first. It was the first request Hollowbell had granted him without negotiation in thirty-seven years.

At midnight, the intake wagon held more people than its wheels could reasonably support. Nora gave her name for the record. Caro corrected the council’s version of the bargain line by line. Bramble Grimstamp listened from behind his spectacles, occasionally stamping a lie before its speaker had finished telling it.

Nelly sat at the end of the desk with her darkened hand wrapped in evidence cloth. The wolf-shadow curled beneath her chair, large enough to fill the wagon and somehow careful not to disturb a single drawer.

Marie placed a cup beside her. This one smelled less medicinal.

“Did I exceed my authority?” Nelly asked.

“Considerably.”

“Am I suspended?”

Marie glanced toward Caro, who was showing Bramble where his erased name belonged in the municipal record. “Not before you finish the paperwork.”

Nelly understood the reprieve hidden inside the sentence. “Dorian knew about the inventory room.”

“Yes.”

“And the missing pages.”

Marie’s hand tightened once around her cane. “That belongs to a different file.”

“Will you show it to me?”

“When I am certain it will not show you to something else.” It was not an answer. From Marie, it was the beginning of one.

Bramble raised the red stamp over Case File 001. Caro was alive. The guardian remained attached by choice. Dorian remained free. The town’s contract was awake, and Nelly’s shadow knew the dealer by scent. Nothing could honestly be called resolved.

“Disposition?” Bramble asked.

Nelly looked from Nora to Caro, then to Marie. “Reopened.”

Caro placed his bandaged hand beside hers on the file. “And corrected. I was never the suspect.”

Nelly amended the cover: PROTECTED WITNESS. Bramble’s stamp fell. Somewhere deep in the archive, a sealed drawer answered with three slow knocks.
