Background

Filed history

Dorian Vane claims he began as a translator between desperate people and creatures tired of being feared. The surviving records suggest something less charitable: wherever a village suffered an impossible shortage—sleep, rain, luck, healthy children—Dorian appeared with exactly enough miracle to make the first bargain feel reasonable.

He deals in traits too intimate for ordinary markets. The courage to leave. The face someone remembers from a dream. A dead mother’s voice. The ability to feel no guilt until sunrise. Dorian’s prices are rarely money. He prefers future favors, private names, and memories whose value becomes clear only after they are gone. His altered pale eye is believed to recognize desire before its owner admits it; his shadow-stained hand can separate a trait without killing the source, though never without leaving a wound.

He is not reckless, cruel in public, or easily provoked. That makes him more dangerous. Dorian believes no being should be trapped in the form nature assigned it and that traits exist so identity can be revised. Desperation, to him, reveals a person’s truest desire; the consequences belong to whoever accepted the change. He is fascinated by Nelly because her awakened trait chose her—and because the wolf-shadow looks at him as if it remembers his scent.
